We have all heard of a ‘domain name’ but doe we really understand what it means? It is something that may not be that easy to understand, especially for someone new to the website world! Did you know that you may need to worry about the privacy, cost and connection of your domain name? I will break down what a domain name is and what to look for when buying one!
What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is something that every website needs, so it is very important to understand what it is. To put it simply, a domain name is the name that you type in to find a website. So, for example, this website’s domain name is https://www.wp3webedesign.com. All domain names are unique and cannot be shared with other websites.
It is also important to note that a domain name is separate from a website. You need a domain name for people to find your website but they are not the same things. You can always change your website and doing so would not effect your domain name. Also, you can change your domain name but keep the same website. They are closely related but not the same things.
Where to get a Domain Name?
Now that we know what a domain name is, how do we get one? There are MANY places out there that sell domain names. I would recommend checking out namecheckr.com first. This is a great place to check for the availability of your domain name across many platforms and it shows if the .com, .net, .org or .io is available. This is incredibly helpful when starting a new business or blog. You might have the .com domain name available but the same name might not be available in Facebook, Instagram nor Twitter. If that is important to you, then I would reconsider your domain name.
Once you have picked out which domain name fits best, you are ready to purchase one! My favorite place to do this is at Namecheap.com They always have the best deals and are very easy to work with with top notch customer support. To purchase your domain, simply type it in the search box. If that name is not available, you will have other domain name options that you can choose from.
Domain Security and Privacy
Domain security and privacy can be a concern for some people. A LOT of people complain about getting lots and lots of spam emails, mail and phone calls after buying a domain name. The reason this happens is because every domain needs to be registered with ICANN. This information is all gathered into one big database and can be accessed by anyone for free. So, once you register a domain name, your information will be placed on this database….unless you protect yourself. You can purchase Domain privacy protection from your web hosting or domain provider. Another reason why I love Namecheap so much is because they offer this for free!
How much does a Domain Name cost?
How much does a domain name cost? Well, this is a tough question to answer because they do vary. For example, when you sign up for web hosting with Bluehost, they will give you a free domain name! While other sites offer domain names for thousands of dollars if they have been purchased before or they are popular. For the most part, I would say most domain names will cost between $10 to $25 per year.
How to connect my Domain Name to my website?
Lastly, how do I connect my domain name to my website? Well, if you already have a website, then connecting it is all you have left to do! You would need to change the nameservers of your domain name and the name servers where your website is hosted. Your web host can walk you through the steps and there are a lot of tutorials out there.
Anything else that I need to know?
It is very important to renew your domain name once a year. You should receive emails when your domain name is about to renew. If you do not renew your domain name, you will risk losing it. Once a domain name is lost, it is hard to get back.
Free domains will not allow you to have a simple .com domain name. For example, if you decided to use weebly.com to help you build your website and you chose to use a free domain, then your domain name would be domainname.weebly.com.
If you are an established business, then you might want to consider purchasing more than one domain name. You can have all of the domain names redirect to the same website. So, for example, you could purchase domainname.com, domainname.net, domainname.org and domainname.biz and have them all go to the same website. This helps your customers/following find you more easily!
